Signs of Style

Hey baby, what’s your sign? Instead of thinking about that question as a cringe-worthy pick-up line best left to the B-rated movies of the 1980s, let it be a lead into the fascinating topic of astrology. Just how much do you believe you know about yourself and what makes you tick, and how much you are willing to believe is influenced by the pattern of the moon, the orbit of the earth, and the alignment of the stars?

The word zodiac comes from the Greek language, from a term that comes to mean “sculped animal figure”, and for centuries, people have been looking to the sky for guidance, answers, and the mystical wisdom generated by these starry night-time images. Our innate sense of self is woven by the patterns in the sky and shines through each of us in every element of our lives. From the clothes we wear to the books we read, our zodiac influences that which we gravitate to and hold dearest to our heart, but to get there, we have to be willing to open our minds.

Those who think in only straight lines cannot see around a curve.

How does your sign influence your style and reading preferences? Check out these unofficial made-in-the-sky predictions for both your body and your bookshelf.

ARIES (march 21-april 19) With the symbol the ram, this fire sign is physical, energetic, confident and full of natural-born leaders. You will find both street style and power suits in this sign’s closet, great for actively running about town or running the show, which Aries is adept at. The book style “All about Action” sums up the natural instinct of this sign. Authors like Oliver Bowden, Greg Rucka, Ben Coes, and Kate Quinn will appeal to those born under this zodiac sign.

TAURUS (april 21-may 20) This bull of an earth sign is as down-to-earth as they come, dependable, responsible, and stubborn, BUT does not wish to blend in with the crowd. Taurus loves a good statement style piece, from a bold fashion-forward top, to a high quality one-of-a-kind accessory, you will find this sign’s closet bursting with flair. But, because of their pragmatic nature, Taurus likes their bookshelf as realistic as it can be. Contemporary lit stories that are as heartfelt as they are raw will top their list. Authors like John Green, Rainbow Rowell, Jodi Picoult, and Jennifer Niven are sure bets.

GEMINI (may 21-june 20) This air sign, also known as the twins, is the Jekyll and Hyde of the signs who loves to turn heads with a stunning style piece, but won’t wear the same thing twice, constantly keeping people guessing what will come next. No trend is off limits for this sign, as their creativity and experimentation with style plays a role in their wardrobe. “Cunning and mysterious” books are right up this sign’s alley. No matter which genre, if there is a character who plays his or her cards close to the vest, Gemini will immediately identify and form a secret bond.

CANCER (june 21-july 22) Ahh, Cancer, the most-feeling water sign. I know you well, because I am one. Born in the height of summer and guided by the moon, this zodiac sign would live at the beach or near the water if it could. With polished and impeccable taste, timeless classic style can be found, along with a bathing suit and an oversized well-worn sweatshirt, stuffed in every nook and cranny of this sign’s living spaces. Shoes; only when necessary. Because Cancer’s are the most feeling and emotional sign in the zodiac, they can’t say no to a good read full of “angsty and brooding” moods to feed their inner crab. They will feel it to their core and relish every last word.

LEO (july 23-august 22) The fiercest of the fire signs, Leo the lion likes to wear its roar on the outside. Dressing in eye-catching colors and larger-than-life outfits reflects this sign’s passion and desire to live life to the fullest. Because of their cheery and zestful nature, books that are “highly fantastic” with grandiose settings, vibrant characters, and humorous undertones will quench their vivid imaginations. Piers Anthony’s classic ‘Xanth’ series, Robert Jordan’s ‘Wheel of Time’, Tad Williams, R.A. Salvatore, and others of the like will make great reads for this sign.

VIRGO (august 23-september 22) This maiden earth sign likes to be seen in a classic silhouette and understated neutral style as a reflection of their analytical, hardworking, and practical nature. They love a classic, almost uniform look inspired by the clean, earthy tones of the outdoors. While “desolate western” books may not jump out to them as their niche, Virgo’s will find the natural, earthy setting, and quiet solitude of the Western scenes fit well with their pensive nature, as they envision themselves deep in thought and looking west across the wide open plains to the burning sky as the sun sets behind the mountains. William H. Johnstone, Larry McMurtry, Cormac McCarthy, and Craig Johnson will set the tone this sign will enjoy.

LIBRA (september 23-october 22) Known to be wild and a little edgy, Libra’s are ruled by the planet Venus, and the Goddess of love. As big and bold as they are gentle and gracious, the scales that represent their sign demonstrate their intrinsic desire for balance and harmony. Adorned in lush fabrics like velvet, silk, and suede in deep tones of forest green, plum, and mahogany with edgy details will appeal to Libra. Venus, the hottest planet in the solar system, will drive this sign to read, relate, and relish in the most “epically romantic” story they can get their hands on.

SCORPIO (october 23-november 21) Resourceful, brave, and a little bit mysterious, Scorpio likes predictable, reliable, and functional clothing that allows them to be prepared for every scenario. A master of dressing for the occasion, no matter the circumstance there is a hat, coat, pair of shoes, and other clothing items that is just right for that. Born near and around Halloween, this scorpion sign is drawn toward things a little dark and dreary. “Apocalyptic Horror” fits the bill for reading not as much for enjoyment, but as a preparedness guide for tips on how to survive a zombie invasion, maneuver around monsters, and sidestep an alien attack should any of those things happen to occur. Authors like Justin Cronin, Mira Grant, T.L. Payne, and Kyla Stone will suffice.

SAGITARIUS (november 22-december 21) Travel-minded with a great sense of humor and love for philosophy, Sagittarians like to dress in unfussy but put-together style that can transcend boundaries and borders. Clothing that allows for ample movement and a solid, comfortable pair of footwear will get this jet-setter moving in the right direction. “Adventure Awaits” is the motto for this zodiac sign where reading is concerned. Epic story settings and likeable characters who set off on grand quests will get the fires lit under this fire sign’s feet. The Hobbit, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and non-fiction title Into the Wild are just a few to get you started.

CAPRICORN (december 22-january 19) Winter’s child Capricorn loves cozy, comfort when it comes to getting dressed. Classic basics like blue jeans, tees, flannels, and knitted sweaters likely make up the majority of this sign’s wardrobe, which is routinely rotated to stay on-trend. Responsible, disciplined, and structured, this earth element sign is great at problem-solving and leading a team, which makes “issue-oriented Sci-Fi” a relatable and fascinating book style for this zodiac. Stuck on Mars? No problem, says Capricorn, let me put my scientific mind to work and get us home. Andy Weir, Peter F. Hamilton, and Adrian Tchaikovsky are great for starters.

AQUARIUS (january 20-february 18) Curious and unique, this air sign is indeed a breath of fresh air. Adaptable, original, independent, and quirky, these traits show through in Aquarius’s style. Whether rocking out intensely in an all-black combo, or testing out bold prints and colors, Aquarius knows how to shine and turn heads. The “unconventional steampunk” book style sums up the Aquarian’s way of life. Fighting for a cause. Intellectually planning. Helping others and making friends. If it’s rebellious, progressive, and different, it has this water bearer’s name all over it. Phillip Reeve’s ‘Moral Engines’ series and Scott Westerfeld’s ‘Leviathan’ will rock your world.

PISCES (february 19-march 20) Free-spirited, gentle, and fun-loving describes this sign and this sign’s style. Bohemian, gem-toned, and metallic prints and fabrics look and feel great on this water sign. Saddled with an artistic and imaginative flair, Pisceans go with the flow and reflect their easy-going vibe. Possessing an inner openness, the Pisces reader will enjoy and appreciate the “magical fantasy” genre that aligns with their own wise and whimsical nature. Kristin Cashore, Sarah J. Maas, Victoria Aveyard, Patrick Rothfuss, and, of course, J.K. Rowling are must-read authors.
